Suan Dok Temple is one of the must-go wats in Chiangmai. Be keen on the relax of Chiangmai's temples that I've seen.
Suan Dok Temple exactly refers “flower garden temple”. The wat derives its name from the place that it was created. The temple location was a long time ago used as a Royal flower park by the chief of Chiangmai. The temple grounds also house the northern campus of the Maha Chulalongkorn Buddhist University.
Suan Dok Temple is a cool place for taking pictures and has hectic vistas of Doi Suthep at sunset. The temple also figures deeply in the lore of Doi Suthep's founding. A Buddha relic was to be housed in its essential pagoda after it parting in two. The other half was placed on the back of a white elephant, that climbed Doi Suthep and then croak. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was founded on the site of the elephant's demise.
Suan Dok Temple, created in late fourteenth century, houses several structures of historical significance. amidst them include the main chedi that enshrines the Buddha’s relics, a orchard of whitewashed grave housing the cinders of late Chiangmai rulers and a large open-air wiharn (assembly hall). The wat is found outer the primitive city wall, approximately one kilometres east of Suan Dok Gate on Suthep Road. built by a King of Chiangmai on the grounds of his gladness garden, this wat was initially wished-for to serve as a flee for a honored monk from Sukothai.
The important viharn was rebuilt in the early 1930's by Khru Ba Srivichai. A large Buddha image with a hand in the situation for holding straw stands back to back with the main seated image. The images took on their present shape under Khru Ba Srivichai. Mural, Chiangmai, Thailand. A smaller viharn to the south carries a seated Buddha image - the Phra Chao Kao Tue - cast by King Muang Kaew in 1504. The Lanna style image stands 4.7 meters tall and is made up of 9 pieces. The walls of the viharn are enrich with murals performance the previous lives of the Buddha (the Vessantara Jataka may be seen on the upper level of the north wall). West of the central viharn numerous stupa put the remains of the royal family of Chiangmai. These were collected from different sites in Chiang Mai and located there at the wish of Princess Dararatsmi in 1909. The compound also consists of the northern campus of the Maha Chulalongkorn Buddhist University of the Mahanikai sect. A wall with tall decorative gates surrounds the compound, and the carcass of earthen walls that formerly surrounded the fortified monastery can still be viewed on the opposite side of the road.
