Overview : For something totally different to see and do, try to fit in your trip a visit to Muang On Cave system in the Chiang Mai area. This cave system is a fascinating place to visit.

Muang On Cave is situated in the San Kamphaeng District, about 35km East of Chiang Mai near the Sankampang Hot Springs. The road leading to Muang On Cave winds it’s way up the side of a hill. A long 187 steps of Naga Serpent stairway rewards with a scenic view over the valley, and a steep climb down of 132 steps leads to a number of caverns filled with impressive stalagmites and stalactites.

Once inside you have several steep staircases going down along with several flat walkways in between. All the way down you will pass by grottos dotted with shrines most of which are lit with fluorescent lights. When you reach the main cavern floor you will see a huge 30 foot long reclining Buddha. Look above the statue and see if you can see what some say is a fossilized dinosaur skeleton.

The most breathtaking is the steeple tall sparkling stalagmite, which also can be seen through a gap as big as a plane window along the stairway on the upper level. A corner of the cave where water spouts drops from the host of stalactites is also a wonder, especially so in the wet season when continuous gushes offer a vision of an underground waterfall. In one cavern is a large Buddha image.

After that visit Sankampang hot springs where the hot springs boil continuously and emit a strong smell of sulfur. You can also enjoy watching the thermal geysers rising inside the beautifully landscaped flower gardens within the park area.
